This year, It Gets Better celebrates its 15th anniversary with #Mis15, a campaign uplifting Hispanic and Latine LGBTQ+ voices during Hispanic Heritage Month. The campaign highlights stories of orgullo (pride), resistencia (resilience), and futuro (future), values that not only define our collective history but also inspire the paths ahead.

One of those voices is Kiki (pictured second from right with friends at a Pride festival in New Jersey), a proud Mexican trans youth activist and Youth Voices alumnus, Kiki’s journey reflects the heart of #Mis15: embracing heritage, challenging obstacles, and envisioning a better tomorrow for Latine LGBTQ+ youth everywhere.

Heritage as a Foundation

For Kiki, heritage isn’t something separate from who she is, it’s the root of her identity.

“Being from Mexico, my Hispanic heritage and culture is who I am. It’s ingrained in the food I eat, the music I listen to, my values, and my aspirations. My family and community are the reasons I am who I am, and I can’t wait to continue to grow and expand my Hispanic community.”

Her pride in her roots speaks to the orgullo celebrated in #Mis15: honoring where we come from and carrying it forward.

Navigating Culture and Queerness

Kiki’s experience also shows the resistencia required to be visible and authentic in spaces that don’t always understand queerness.

“Latine culture is inherently religious and can be conservative, and for me, this meant a very different coming-out process than many of my peers. When I came out, many of my older family members had no idea what terms like bisexual, transgender, or even queer meant, so the process included educating them as well.”

What could have been only a struggle became an opportunity for connection and transformation.

“I have seen how beautiful it can be when both identities interact and combine to form a unique experience—one I would not change for the world.”

Growing as a Leader Through Youth Voices

Kiki’s leadership blossomed through It Gets Better’s Youth Voices program, which brings together LGBTQ+ youth from across the globe to share their stories and fuel change.

“I was part of the Youth Voices class of 2022 and 2023, and I am so excited to continue my journey at It Gets Better. From stepping in as a leader at my school’s GSA to continuing national advocacy work with the Human Rights Campaign and It Gets Better, I have grown as an activist and as a person.”

Her journey is a reflection of the futuro #Mis15 calls us to imagine: one where Latine LGBTQ+ youth lead, inspire, and shape the world.

A Message of Hope

When asked what message she would give to Latine LGBTQ+ youth today, Kiki offered a reminder of why #Mis15 exists:

“My message for Latine LGBTQ+ youth is like the name of the organization suggests—it will, in fact, get better. Hispanic Heritage Month is a time to celebrate the past in our community, but it is also a time to imagine a future for ourselves. So I implore you to keep going and know that It Gets Better.”

Kiki’s story embodies what #Mis15 is all about: celebrating orgullo, embracing resistencia, and building a futuro where every LGBTQ+ young person can thrive. #Mis15 Spotlight: Kiki sobre Herencia, Identidad y Activismo como Jóven Trans Latine

Este año, It Gets Better celebra su 15.º aniversario con #Mis15, una campaña que pone en alto las voces LGBTQ+ hispanas y latines durante el Mes de la Herencia Hispana. La campaña destaca historias de orgullo, resistencia y futuro —valores que no solo definen nuestra historia colectiva, sino que también inspiran los caminos que tenemos por delante.

Una de esas voces es Kiki, una joven trans mexicana, activista y exalumna de Youth Voices de las clases de 2022 y 2023. Su trayectoria refleja el corazón de #Mis15: abrazar la herencia, enfrentar obstáculos y visualizar un mañana mejor para la juventud LGBTQ+ latine en todo el mundo.

La Herencia como Fundación

Para Kiki, la herencia no es algo separado de quién es, sino la raíz de su identidad.

“Siendo de México, mi herencia y cultura hispana es quien soy. Está presente en la comida que como, la música que escucho, mis valores y mis aspiraciones. Mi familia y mi comunidad son la razón de quién soy, y no puedo esperar para seguir creciendo y expandiendo mi comunidad hispana.”

Su orgullo por sus raíces refleja el orgullo que celebramos en #Mis15: honrar de dónde venimos y llevarlo adelante.

Navegando la Cultura y la Queerness

La experiencia de Kiki también muestra la resistencia necesaria para ser visible y auténtica en espacios que no siempre comprenden la queerness.

“La cultura latine es inherentemente religiosa y puede ser conservadora, y para mí esto significó un proceso de salida del clóset muy diferente al de muchos de mis pares. Cuando salí, muchos de mis familiares mayores no sabían qué significaban términos como bisexual, transgénero o incluso queer, así que el proceso incluyó educarlos también.”

Lo que podría haber sido solo un desafío se convirtió en una oportunidad de conexión y transformación.

“He visto lo hermoso que puede ser cuando ambas identidades interactúan y se combinan para formar una experiencia única, una que no cambiaría por nada en el mundo.”

Creciendo como Líder a través de Youth Voices

El liderazgo de Kiki floreció gracias al programa Youth Voices de It Gets Better, que reúne a jóvenes LGBTQ+ de todo el mundo para compartir sus historias y generar cambio.

“Formé parte de las clases de Youth Voices de 2022 y 2023, y estoy muy emocionada de continuar mi camino en It Gets Better. Desde asumir un rol de liderazgo en el GSA de mi escuela hasta continuar el trabajo de defensa a nivel nacional con Human Rights Campaign e It Gets Better, he crecido como activista y como persona.”

Su trayectoria refleja el futuro que #Mis15 nos invita a imaginar: un futuro donde la juventud LGBTQ+ latine lidera, inspira y transforma el mundo.

Un Mensaje de Esperanza

Cuando le preguntamos qué mensaje compartiría con la juventud LGBTQ+ latine hoy, Kiki ofreció un recordatorio del propósito de #Mis15:

“Mi mensaje para la juventud LGBTQ+ latine es, como sugiere el nombre de la organización, que de hecho va a mejorar. El Mes de la Herencia Hispana es un momento para celebrar el pasado de nuestra comunidad, pero también es un momento para imaginar un futuro para nosotres. Así que les insto a seguir adelante y a saber que It Gets Better.”
