Brave & Authentic: A Peruvian Trans Documentary

Since 2016, our Affiliate in Peru has worked tirelessly to bring visibility to LGBTQ+ stories in one of Latin America’s most diverse and conservative countries. As we’ve seen recently with the rise in anti-trans initiatives around the world, sharing stories of the trans community has never been more important.
We proudly awarded a Global Grant to It Gets Better Perú to create “Brave & Authentic”, a conversation series between trans activist and journalist Gianna Camacho and four other Peruvian trans women: content creator Mia Paredes, musician Almendra Pamela, professional stylist Danitza García and trans activist Génesis. They share stories on overcoming struggles, building community, and amplifying trans stories.
We talked with It Gets Better Perú’s president Lucy Ibáézto better understand why these stories are important to share and what their hopes are for this film in Peru:
Why did you decide to focus on the stories of the trans community for this project?
We decided to focus on the history of trans women because they are often not properly portrayed in the media. It is important to focus on their stories to shed light on their needs and the challenges they face as a lack of recognition of their rights in the country. These include the lack of gender identity laws and job opportunities. On the other hand, we also wanted to show their resilience to overcome these various obstacles and get ahead.
For example, this February, Rubi, a trans woman, was murdered in downtown Lima. We are still seeking justice for Rubí, as for many other trans-feminicides that did not receive the same attention. This gender and State drove us to focus on producing visual stories of trans women with different origins and life stories. These stories aim to raise awareness of the importance of creating and generating safe and inclusive community spaces for LGBTQ+ youth.
How did you find these 4 trans women for the series?
We worked with a trans woman activist and journalist to find the profiles we wanted to show: trans women with different life stories, from diverse parts of Peru and with various challenges based on their gender identity and expression. Through this contact, we built rapport to show them our vision, the documentary the importance of showcasing their stories.
Why was this project important for you to work on?
It was essential for us to make this documentary to showcase the stories of trans women, who often are invisible in the media or social networks or who are usually portrayed negatively or stereotypically. This documentary aims to amplify their voices to inspire the LGBTQ+ community. Having the opportunity to approach the unique resilience stories of trans women and be able to show them to various key actors is a truly valuable opportunity that we plan on continuing for future materials.
In terms of funding projects such as this in Peru, how important is it that initiatives like our Global Grants fund exist?
It is important to have allies and funding initiatives that support the historical audiovisual record of the LGBTQ+ population so that future generations know the struggles and resilience of the LGBTQ+ community, as the ever-present effort and fight for rights recognition. Furthermore, this type of funding allows civil society organizations to create materials that would enable them to lobby key actors to support the LGBTQ+ population in their struggles and visions.
What do you hope this series accomplishes in the current context of the trans community in Peru?
We hope that this documentary can educate and sensitize people. Amidst the current climate, we aim to create a more empathetic and supportive environment where trans people can be heard, seen, and valued. By focusing on the experiences, challenges, and triumphs of trans women, we hope to challenge stereotypes, reduce stigma, and show the path to a more equitable and inclusive future for the trans community in Peru.

Como hemos visto recientemente con el aumento de iniciativas anti-trans en todo el mundo, compartir historias de la comunidad trans nunca ha sido más importante.
Orgullosamente otorgamos una subvención de nuestro fondo de Global Grants a It Gets Better Perú para crear “Brave & Authentic”, una serie de conversaciones entre la activista y periodista trans Gianna Camacho y otras cuatro mujeres trans peruanas: la creadora de contenido Mia Paredes, la música Almendra Pamela, la estilista profesional Danitza García y Génesis, activista trans. Comparten historias sobre cómo superar luchas, construir una comunidad y amplificar las historias trans.
Hablamos con la presidenta de It Gets Better Perú, Lucy Ibáéz, para comprender mejor por qué es importante compartir estas historias y cuáles son sus esperanzas para esta película en Perú:
¿Por qué decidiste centrarte en las historias de la comunidad trans para este proyecto?
Decidimos centrarnos en la historia de las mujeres trans porque a menudo no aparecen adecuadamente en los medios. Es importante centrarse en sus historias para arrojar luz sobre sus necesidades y los desafíos que enfrentan como falta de reconocimiento de sus derechos en el país. Estos incluyen la falta de leyes de identidad de género y de oportunidades laborales. Por otro lado, también queríamos mostrar su resiliencia para superar estos diversos obstáculos y salir adelante.
Por ejemplo, en febrero pasado, Rubi, una mujer trans, fue asesinada en el centro de Lima. Seguimos buscando justicia para Rubí, como para muchos otros feminicidios trans que no recibieron la misma atención. Este género y Estado nos impulsó a enfocarnos en producir historias visuales de mujeres trans con diferentes orígenes e historias de vida. Estas historias tienen como objetivo crear conciencia sobre la importancia de crear y generar espacios comunitarios seguros e inclusivos para los jóvenes LGBTQ+.
¿Cómo encontraste a estas 4 mujeres trans para la serie?
Trabajamos con una mujer trans activista y periodista para encontrar los perfiles que queríamos mostrar: mujeres trans con diferentes historias de vida, de diversas partes del Perú y con diversos desafíos en función de su identidad y expresión de género. A través de este contacto, establecimos una buena relación para mostrarles nuestra visión y el documental la importancia de mostrar sus historias.
¿Por qué era importante para usted trabajar en este proyecto?
Para nosotres era fundamental hacer este documental para mostrar las historias de mujeres trans, que muchas veces son invisibles en los medios o las redes sociales o que suelen ser retratadas de forma negativa o estereotipada. Este documental tiene como objetivo amplificar sus voces para inspirar a la comunidad LGBTQ+. Tener la oportunidad de acercarnos a las historias únicas de resiliencia de las mujeres trans y poder mostrarlas a varios actores clave es una oportunidad verdaderamente valiosa que planeamos continuar en materiales futuros.
En términos de financiación de proyectos como este en Perú, ¿qué importancia tiene que existan iniciativas como nuestro fondo de Subvenciones Globales?
Es importante contar con aliados e iniciativas de financiamiento que apoyen el registro audiovisual histórico de la población LGBTQ+ para que las generaciones futuras conozcan las luchas y resiliencias de la comunidad LGBTQ+, como el esfuerzo y la lucha siempre presente por el reconocimiento de derechos. Además, este tipo de financiación permite a las organizaciones de la sociedad civil crear materiales que les permitan presionar a actores clave para que apoyen a la población LGBTQ+ en sus luchas y visiones.
¿Qué esperas que logre esta serie en el contexto actual de la comunidad trans en el Perú?
Esperamos que este documental pueda educar y sensibilizar a la gente. En medio del clima actual, nuestro objetivo es crear un entorno más empático y solidario donde las personas trans puedan ser escuchadas, vistas y valoradas. Al centrarnos en las experiencias, desafíos y triunfos de las mujeres trans, esperamos desafiar los estereotipos, reducir el estigma y mostrar el camino hacia un futuro más equitativo e inclusivo para la comunidad trans en el Perú.
