LGBTQ+ Russians Find Hope Outside of Their Motherland

In November 2022, It Gets Better Russia went dark as the country grappled with the Ukraine conflict and a heightened crackdown on LGBTQ+ non-profits’ social media use. The safety of the staff and volunteers was a significant concern, and operating an organization aimed at serving LGBTQ+ youth while Russia’s government branded LGBTQ+ movements as extremist and terrorist organizations felt too great a risk. 

Now, two years later and with staff safely out of the country, It Gets Better Russia has emerged as a beacon of hope — they are amplifying the voices of LGBTQ+ Russians who have found solace and community in exile, particularly in countries like Spain.

“As soon as I had the opportunity to move to another country, I saw dozens of examples that if you believe, things will definitely get better,” said Alexey M., the Executive Director of It Gets Better Russia. “Many are still afraid. But you should believe.”

Spain is one of many countries where many LGBTQ+ Russians have found a safe haven. 

“Spain is like another planet,” he said. “Here we are slowly getting used to not being afraid of the state. Here you understand that you are not an enemy, that you are not bad, that you have the right to be happy.

The importance of sharing these stories cannot be overstated. It Gets Better Russia recognizes the resilience and strength of LGBTQ+ individuals who have been forced to leave their homes in search of acceptance and safety. By sharing their experiences, our Affiliate aims to shed light on the struggles faced by LGBTQ+ Russians who are finding community and support in times of adversity in places far from their home. 

“We didn’t film new videos for three and a half years, but we continued to support people on social media. Even when talking about positive stories in Russian emigration, we must be extremely careful.”

En noviembre de 2022, It Gets Better Russia tuvo que suspender operaciones mientras el país lidiaba con el conflicto de Ucrania y una mayor represión contra el uso de las redes sociales por parte de organizaciones sin fines de lucro LGBTQ+. La seguridad del personal y voluntaries era una preocupación importante, y operar una organización destinada a servir a los jóvenes LGBTQ+ mientras el gobierno de Rusia calificaba a los movimientos LGBTQ+ de organizaciones extremistas y terroristas parecía un riesgo demasiado grande.

Ahora, dos años después y con el personal fuera del país, It Gets Better Russia se ha convertido en un faro de esperanza: están amplificando las voces LGBTQ+ rusas que han encontrado consuelo y comunidad en el exilio, particularmente en países como España.

“Tan pronto como tuve la oportunidad de mudarme a otro país, vi docenas de ejemplos de que, si crees, las cosas definitivamente mejorarán”, dijo Alexey M., director ejecutivo de It Gets Better Russia. “Muches todavía tienen miedo. Pero deberías creer”.

España es uno de los muchos países donde muchos rusos LGBTQ+ han encontrado un refugio seguro.

“España es como otro planeta”, afirmó. “Aquí poco a poco nos estamos acostumbrando a no tenerle miedo al Estado. Aquí entiendes que no eres un enemigue, que no eres male, que tienes derecho a ser feliz.”

No se puede subestimar la importancia de compartir estas historias. It Gets Better Russia reconoce la resiliencia y la fuerza de las personas LGBTQ+ que se han visto obligadas a abandonar sus hogares en busca de aceptación y seguridad. Al compartir sus experiencias, nuestra Filial pretende arrojar luz sobre las luchas que enfrentan ls personas rusas LGBTQ+ que encuentran comunidad y apoyo en tiempos de adversidad en lugares lejos de su hogar.

“No grabamos vídeos nuevos durante tres años y medio, pero seguimos apoyando a la gente en las redes sociales. Incluso cuando hablamos de historias positivas de la emigración rusa, debemos tener mucho cuidado”.
