It Gets Better iguana pin inspired by SNL sketch raises more than $20,000 to support LGBTQ+ youth.

When Saturday Night Live aired the “It Gets Better” sketch a few weeks ago, we were seeing it for the first time with all of you. We were shocked, flattered, and incredibly honored to see an iconic show — and a cast of out and proud comedians — pay tribute to our work and to the legacy of these videos.

We were also quite taken with the iguana.

We thought the iguana might make a fun keepsake, so we enlisted the help of artist Moriah Benton to make an “It Gets Better” iguana pin inspired by the sketch. In three days, we raised more than $20,000. Every dollar goes to support the It Gets Better Project’s mission to uplift, empower and connect LGBTQ+ youth around the globe.

“Progress comes with its fair share of iguanas, and the analogy clearly struck a chord with the It Gets Better community,” Executive Director Brian Wenke told Out Magazine. “We are shocked at the popularity of our tribute iguana pin, but thrilled that its proceeds will support our ongoing efforts to provide LGBTQ+ youth with positive and uplifting experiences on their journey to self-actualization.”

Support for initiatives like this is crucial to the success of the It Gets Better Project. This project was built by an engaged and committed community, and that community continues to show up for LGBTQ+ youth time and time again.
