I love my mom. When I came out, it was not easy for her to challenge the preconceived ideas she had about my future. But, she did it anyway, and became an amazing ally in the process – not just for me but for so many others in the LGBTQ community, as well. For this, I am extremely fortunate and grateful, but I know this isn’t the case for everyone.
Several years ago, my mom recorded an It Gets Better® story. She talked about the fears and prejudices she faced when I came out as gay, and she emphasized the importance of getting involved with the LGBTQ+ community and accepting and loving your kids unconditionally.
Today, that message of unconditional love is more important than ever, and I’m honored the It Gets Better Project has selected my mom’s words to celebrate Mother’s Day.
This Mother’s Day, please consider honoring your mother by supporting the work of the It Gets Better Project. Whether it’s the mom on your birth certificate, the mother who raised you, your drag mom, or the mom who took you under her wing, ALL moms deserve a tribute for their perseverance in creating a better world for young people around the world.
