Since 2010, the It Gets Better Project and its Global Affiliate Network have collected over 60,000 video stories from LGBTQ+ people and their allies from around the globe. Here are some of our favorite moments from October 2020.
Canada: #ComingOutDay x NYX Cosmetics
It Gets Better Canada partnered up with NYX Cosmetics for the hosting of a virtual hangouts private session for and with LGBTQ+ youth in Canada, to create a safe space for them to be heard and seen. The response was amazing and it became a little more special thanks to the surprise appearance of queer public figures like Adam Lambert, Gigi Gorgeous, Lauren Jauregui, Daniel Reyes, and Julie Vu.
Brazil: Volunteer Shares His Story for #ComingOutDay
Daniel Leal, a volunteer at It Gets Better Brasil and the co-founder entrepreneur of a media agency in Brazil, shares his coming out story.
Mexico: Top Marketer Shares Hope In Time for #ComingOutDay
Born in one of Mexico’s most conservatives states, Jesús shares about his upbringing and how things got better not in spite of who he is but thanks to it.
Spain: A Letter To My Young-Self
In a series called “A Letter To My Young-Self”, It Gets Better España collected 17 stories of queer women to express a message of hope they would’ve hoped to receive in their teens. This is Sonia’s letter.
USA: Out In Front – Queer Youth Changing The World
Cynthia Garcia migrated to Oklahoma at 15, living in fear her family could be deported. Coming out to her mother “was like a telenovela” and she found a great deal of homophobia in the Latinx immigrant community and anti-immigrant sentiment in her local queer community. Now, Garcia works in deportation defense, helping other “undocuqueer” people in crisis avoid deportation with United We Dream.
Not to mention…
Mexico: #AlwaysPride
As part of their educational program #EspaciosSeguros and in partnership with the Safety and Public Policy team at Twitter LatAm, It Gets Better México created guidelines for LGBTQ+ youth to create safe spaces on the platform by knowing the rules to protect themselves and some tips around Twitter to help our communities voices to be heard.
Argentina: Ace Visibility Week
Our affiliate in Argentina made sure that the ace community wasn’t overlooked this season by observing this important week of awareness through some graphic assets that reflect on the diversity within the many asexual identities.
Guatemala: Learning About Asexuality
Our Affiliate in Guatemala organized a beautiful dynamic (with a beautiful new character 👻) to connect with young LGBTQ+ people on a different type of celebration because of COVID19, but no less fun for that.
