Does the ban on gays and lesbians serving openly in the military impact LGBT youth?
Yes, it does.
For many young Americans, military service is a way up and out of poverty and a way to pay for college. Those options are currently closed to LGBT youth who are living in poverty or need help paying for college. So the ban on openly gay service members does impact LGBT kids in real and sometimes profound ways.
And, of course, government-sanctioned discrimination against LGBT people — adults and youth — legitimizes anti-gay attitudes and empowers the bullies.
